Conversion work in frohnleiten mill – a photographic record

The conversion and expansion work carried out in the Frohnleiten mill for the production of FOODBOARD™ was a project of superlatives: 4,000 m3 of concrete was used, 40,000 m of cables laid and at peak times there were 800 workers on site every day. Our photographic record documents the huge joint effort made to which we owe the fact that FOODBOARD™ is now being supplied.

For our “inline production” of FOODBOARD™, the larger cartonboard machine in Frohnleiten (board machine 3, BM3) was switched off at the beginning of November 2014 and released for the main conversion. Downtime in this case meant progress: we invested in both technology and product development and therefore in the future!

Highest security of supply due to pre-production and our MultiMill concept

A whole variety of sections of the 170 m long machine were tackled at the same time in the shortest amount of time. Several cranes were strategically placed around the machine on the site and were constantly at the ready. This facilitated the transport of parts and supported the complex internal logistics. Full production began again after only three weeks of rebuilt downtime. Through the proactive production in advance of standard grades in high demand, it was possible to guarantee the highest security of supply even during the conversion phase. In addition, our MultiMill concept – production of specific types of cartonboard in different group locations – secured a seamless supply of cartonboard to our customers.

BM3 – more productive, increaseed energy efficient

But the conversion work has already been in full swing in Frohnleiten since the beginning of 2014: besides the complete conversion of the coating section on board machine 3, strengthening of the power supply and the construction of various ancillary facilities, the drive for BM3 was also replaced by the installation of highly modern electric servo drives. As a result, the machine is now even more productive as well as working with increased energy efficiency. The environment naturally benefits too through the use of the latest drying technology and highly modern energy recovery systems. Mayr-Melnhof Karton has invested more than 50 million euros in these conversion projects.

Starting with the proposal management, through the coordination of all involved all the way to inspecting the plans and ensuring efficient project management and observance of the company‘s specific quality standards – this achievement is to the immense credit of our MMK Frohnleiten team whose outstanding commitment and high levels of innovative energy have made this food safety cartonboard possible.
