General information
A fundamental physical property that defines a cartonboard is the grammage (basis weight). The grammage of a cartonboard is measured according to EN ISO 536 and indicates the weight of a cartonboard per area in g/m². The determination of the grammage is carried out by gravimetric methods. The total mass is the sum of fibre materials, coating, fillers, additives and water.

The basis weight consists of the combined weight of the uncoated cartonboard and the coating. The amount of fibres has a significant relevance for the strength and stiffness of the cartonboard.
