Mayr-Melnhof Group honoured with GreenTech-Award
The Paris Agreement reached in December 2015 on climate protection aims to reduce man-made global warming to significantly below two degrees Celsius relative to the pre-industrial era. Five years later in 2020, in what will be a memorable year for all, the climate target that was set may seem to have been eclipsed by the fight against a completely different crisis. It is therefore all the more encouraging that the efforts of an increasing number of companies towards further action to combat climate change are being appreciated and acknowledged. Consequently, the Mayr-Melnhof Group was awarded the newly introduced Green Tech Award of the ÖGSV (the Austrian Society for Consumer Studies) for its contribution to climate protection through innovative cartonboard packaging.
The presence of the COVID 19 pandemic affecting all sectors of society in different ways has mushroomed into a priority for all of us within the space of a year. The awareness of increasing global warming, however, was in no way diminished by this new challenge. Quite the opposite: a survey conducted by the management consultant Deloitte found that many more senior executives of large companies are concerned about the climate crisis compared to the previous year.
While all hopes for the development of a vaccine in the COVID-19 crisis are pinned on a modest number of pharmaceutical companies, the climate crisis calls for the innovative spirit of a wide range of industries. The ÖGSV has therefore awarded the Green Tech Award to Austrian companies and research institutions for the first time “whose wealth of inventiveness has been proven to contribute to the fight against climate change or whose new innovations make it possible to adapt to climate change”.
The Mayr-Melnhof Group takes particular delight in the award, since it is a very special recognition of the innovative efforts made over the past few years.
In its capacity as a producer of the most environmentally friendly packaging material, cartonboard, and as an industry leader, the Mayr-Melnhof Group always puts sustainability first. Cartonboard is eco-intelligent, renewable, recyclable and compostable.
