ALASKA® Strong: Brunberg´s recyclable packaging choice for a more sustainable future

Brunberg, a 150-year-old confectionery factory in Porvoo, Finland, is a family business with long roots in history but an eye on the future. The factory’s traditional, much-loved product range is regularly updated with new additions, the latest seasonal product being Brunberg Orange Kiss, a chocolate coated foam sweet with flavour of orange.

In addition to the launch of the fresh new flavour, the product packaging has also undergone a makeover. In a facelift, the plastic window has been removed from the lid, reducing plastic consumption remarkably. The box is now made entirely of cartonboard. The same packaging change will be made to the entire range of foam sweet flavours by the summer. The plastic window has been a visual element in these packages and has been difficult to recycle separately. With the packaging reformulation, Brunberg is one step closer to the goal of reducing the use of plastic material in packaging. The new product package will be recycled in its entirety for cartonboard collection.

The redesigned cartonboard package is a result of a fruitful collaboration between the brand owner, the package converter and the producer of cartonboard raw material. The new package for these Brunberg sweets is converted by Pyroll Packaging and it is made from ALASKA® STRONG folding boxboard produced at MM Kotkamills.

Katarina Enholm, Managing Director of Brunberg Oy, tells about the redesign project: “This year at Brunberg we are building a sustainability programme, in which fight against climate change is an important part. Chocolate-coated foam sweets are one of our most popular products and therefore the first change towards better recyclability is being made for the packaging of them. Thanks to the new gorgeous design, the product is beautifully presented on the packaging and the plastic window is no longer considered necessary. A lot of plastic is saved in a year. We will also look at other packaging and develop it to be more environmentally friendly where possible.”

“MM Kotkamills is delighted to supply easily recyclable cartonboard for the new packaging range. In these new packages of six foam sweets the brand colour of each flavor of these sweets as well as the product information printed on the surface of the packaging shines brightly and attractively on store shelves. After enjoying the sweet moment, the responsible consumer recycles the packaging into a cartonboard recycling stream,” says Managing Director of MM Kotkamills, Päivi Suutari.

Commercial Director Ari-Pekka Pietilä from the producer of the package, Pyroll, continues: “Pyroll Packaging offers its customers assistance in developing responsible packaging solutions, aided by the company’s experience with different types of packaging and materials, as well as its long-standing customer relationships. Brunberg’s traditional chocolate kisses box was renewed with sustainability in mind using high-quality MM Kotkamills cartonboard without a window. The work was facilitated by the high brand awareness, which contributed to the windowless packaging. Now the package is easier to recycle. And anything that streamlines recycling is a plus.”
