MM Karton to invest over EUR 100 million in Frohnleiten board mill
Focus on sustainability, digitization and growth. A milestone for Europe’s largest recycled cartonboard mill.
„This is the largest investment that the MM Group has ever made in Austria”, describes MM CEO Peter Oswald the comprehensive renewal and expansion program for the Austrian MM Karton Frohnleiten board mill in the years 2021-2022. The focus of the more than EUR 100 million investment is on sustainability, digitalization and capacity expansion for securing the future with the use of state-of-the-art technologies.
Innovative fully digitalized processes will significantly increase the efficiency of the stock preparation while reducing specific energy and water consumption. The latest production technologies in cartonboard manufacturing will increase product quality and capacities as a prerequisite for further applications of recycled cartonboard, e.g. also as a substitute for plastic. Highly automated logistics will significantly accelerate the movement of goods.
“Circular Economy is an integral part of the MM Group’s business activities; technological leadership and sustainability are an essential part of our long-term concept for success. The historic investment in the Frohnleiten mill is a “triple win”. It not only creates new sales opportunities and an improvement in the ecological footprint in terms of water, energy and emissions, but also makes a significant contribution to safeguarding jobs and training positions at the site. Environmentally friendly packaging solutions are trendy – with its extensive technological innovations, MM Karton Frohnleiten ensures sustainable coverage of the growing demand with attractive added value for the site and the region”, says CEO Peter Oswald, summarizing the extensive significance of the investment.
The MM Group is Europe’s largest producer of board and folding cartons. More than 1.7 million tonnes of cartonboard are produced annually, a third of which is manufactured by around 570 employees at the Austrian Frohnleiten board mill. The MM Group employs approximately 10,000 people worldwide, of which about 1,800 work in Austria.
