How tamper-evident folding cartons & labels improve patient safety in pharmaceutical supply chains

Protecting patients goes beyond producing high-quality medicines—it also means ensuring that every pack reaches the end user exactly as intended. Tamper-evident (TE) folding cartons and labels are a critical element of that protection, acting as a visible barrier against manipulation and counterfeiting.

Why Tamper Evidence Matters in Pharma

Pharmaceutical products are vulnerable to theft, diversion, and counterfeit substitution as they travel through complex global supply chains. Any undetected interference can compromise drug efficacy, put patients at risk, and expose brand owners to regulatory penalties.
Tamper-evident packaging provides a clear, irreversible signal if a carton has been opened or altered, giving pharmacists, healthcare professionals, and patients immediate confidence in product integrity.

Design and Supply-Chain Considerations

A successful tamper-evident system must balance patient safety, production efficiency, and sustainability while ensuring full compliance with regulatory labeling rules. Key aspects include:

  • Compatibility with high-speed packaging lines to maintain throughput without compromising seal integrity.
  • Print surfaces for serialization and track-and-trace codes, enabling seamless integration with global authentication systems.
  • Use of recyclable or mono-material boards to support circular-economy goals and reduce environmental impact.
  • Placement and readability of tamper-evident labels: when a TE label is used as the security device, it must never obscure critical information such as product name, dosage, batch number, expiry date, or mandatory regulatory symbols. Pharmaceutical packs are subject to strict readability requirements (e.g., EU Directive 2001/83/EC and FDA labeling rules). Poor label placement can delay dispensing or even trigger recalls.
  • Early design collaboration: integrating TE features into the artwork and production process from the outset—working closely with packaging engineers and regulatory teams—ensures both compliance and efficiency.
