MM Board & Paper is dedicated to responsible and sustainable practices in cartonboard and paper production, recognising that wood, water and energy are the fundamental ingredients, that need to be used responsibly.
Sustainable Production
Leadership in sustainability
From utilising renewable raw materials to implementing energy-efficient technologies, we are committed to producing top-quality products on our state-of-the-art machinery while minimising our environmental footprint.
For this commitment, the MM Group has been recognised for leadership in corporate transparency and performance on climate change, forests and water security by the global environmental non-profit CDP. Based on 2023 data, the MM Group is one of only ten companies that achieved a triple ‘A’ rating.
Fibres
For our products, we use the renewable raw material wood from sustainably managed forests. All mills of MM Board & Paper have been certified according to FSC® and PEFC. This creates maximum transparency of our fibre use. Recovered paper is obtained exclusively from verified sources in European urban centres in order to guarantee strict origin and quality control and the highest level of supply reliability.
As the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) will bring new requirements for MM sites, we are taking all necessary steps to implement a system that will ensure compliance with these regulations.
Water
Most of the MM Board & Paper mills are located directly at watercourses. When looking at the fresh water consumption minus rainwater (blue water consumption) of the MM Board & Paper mills, it is noticeable that up to 97% of our process water of the virgin fibre cartonboard mills is returned to the global fresh water cycle, which means that our overall water consumption is very low.
Water is treated several times in an internal cycle by using the extracted groundwater first as cooling water and then in several stages as process water. Circulation and efficiency improvements are continuously reducing overall water consumption. To implement responsible water management even more comprehensively in the future, we at MM have initiated a strategy process that is based on the standard of the ‘Alliance for Water Stewardship’ as well as the ‘Water Mandate’ of the UN Global Compact.
Energy
Decarbonisation activities enjoy the highest priority. By implementing renewable energy sources and optimising energy usage, we continuously reduce our carbon footprint and increase efficiency, ultimately leading to a positive impact on the environment. The framework for our energy management and decarbonisation efforts includes the ‘European Green Deal’ with the goal of climate neutrality for the EU by 2050.
According to science-based targets endorsed by the Science Based Targets initiative, we at MM contribute to mitigating climate change. Furthermore, we are part of the global platform Business Ambition for 1.5°C. We hold certifications in the areas of energy and environmental management according to ISO 50001, EMAS and ISO 14001.
Strategy and Targets
Through ambitious goals and corresponding actions, we promote environmental sustainability and contribute to the preservation of the natural habitat for us and future generations.
Meet the team
“When we align our strengths, we can unlock new opportunities and achieve results that truly make a difference.
Transparent collaboration across the value chain is essential for driving sustainable success. By working together and supporting each other’s goals, we create a synergy that delivers far greater impact than any single effort. We invite our value chain partners to collaborate with us in jointly driving impact, meeting stakeholder expectations, and advancing long-term sustainability goals.”
Katja Tuomola
Head of Group Sustainability & Safety
“We aim to provide our customers a clear and transparent picture about all sustainability aspects of our products and MM Group.
With our strategic targets set in the areas decarbonisation, water and raw materials as well as our close monitoring of the performance, we strive for continuous improvement.”
Bernhard Heneis
Head of Group Sustainability
“Responsible production and the usage of new technologies go hand in hand.
The latest conversions at our mills MM Frohnleiten, MM Neuss and MM Kolicevo are a clear commitment to sustainability: higher capacities mean lower specific resource input. As a result, the machines at all three locations consume proportionally less energy. In addition to performance, all of the projects mentioned place a major focus on the properties of the cartonboard in order to save fibres and, indirectly, CO2 all while improving the product quality.”
Tomi Lonka
Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
“Using resources responsibly and carefully is an important goal in providing energy for our sites.
We therefore produce a large share of the electricity we need ourselves. We are also constantly improving our ecological footprint by using energy sources with low CO2 emissions and purchasing green electricity. We additionally plan to make our energy use even more flexible in order to support the electrification of the energy systems in the countries in which we operate.”
Peter Stieger
Head of Group Energy Sourcing
“We are constantly looking for new and innovative technologies to improve the energy efficiency of our paper and board production and power plants, including the mandatory auxiliary systems we need to run our mills.
This is an important part of our ongoing CO2 reduction journey. In addition, we have established a vibrant network of energy managers at our mills to ensure that these energy saving initiatives are implemented and that best practice is shared.”
Elisabeth Salajka
Head of Energy Management
“The responsible usage of raw materials, including both virgin and recycled fibres, is in our DNA.
We use renewable raw materials from sustainably managed forests and all MM Board & Paper mills are certified according to FSC® and PEFC.”
Christian Ruthner
Head of Wood Sourcing
“Our dedicated team focused on responsible and sustainable sourcing strengthens the value chain
between our suppliers, internal stakeholders and customers, and proactively supports the supply chain in adapting to sustainable development and the changing regulatory environment (e.g. EUDR).”
Saila Kettunen
Head of Group Responsible Sourcing
Science Based Target and Net Zero Target
In addition to the existing 1.5 °C target, we have officially committed to a Net Zero Target.
