Cartonboard decisions can be complex. The right partner makes it simple.
Cartonboard rarely gets the strategic attention it deserves.
Too often cartonboard is treated as a background decision – a line in a specification sheet rather than a strategic lever. Artwork changes. Formats evolve. The board often stays untouched until a problem appears or cost pressure forces a review.
That approach no longer holds. Regulatory pressure, changing EPR fee structures, shifting consumer expectations and more complex supply chains have made material choice more consequential than it used to be.
A board specification that made sense years ago may not be the right answer today and, in some cases, it may be creating exposure that nobody has properly assessed. This is not an argument for switching materials for its own sake, but for making the choice deliberately, with a full picture of what you are choosing between. That is where the right partner matters.
Why the decision is more complex than it looks
Broadly speaking, cartonboard falls into two families: virgin fibre and recycled. Virgin fibre comes directly from sustainably managed wood sources; recycled fibre comes from recovered paper and board. Both are recyclable. Both perform strongly across many applications. And both can be the right choice – depending on the job they need to do.
Virgin fibre cartonboard, including our ALASKA® and ADRIATICA® families, offers the highest levels of purity, stiffness and surface quality. That makes it the strongest choice for demanding applications: pharmaceuticals with serialisation and braille, premium cosmetics where print precision and tactile finish matter, and food packaging with extended shelf-life or strict hygiene requirements.
Recycled cartonboard, such as our MCM®, MCB® and TOPCOLOR® families, delivers reliable performance across a wide range of food and consumer goods applications — including areas such as pharma that were once assumed to require virgin fibre. Yet recycled board is still specified more narrowly than its actual performance justifies. That gap between perception and reality is where many brands leave value on the table.

How to think about fibre choice
The clearest starting point is to separate performance questions from strategic ones.
Performance questions are application specific.
- What are the converting requirements?
- What speeds and conditions does the packaging line run at?
- What are the print, finish and structural demands of the pack?
- What food safety or hygiene standards apply?
These are questions with technical answers, and they should drive the grade and grammage selection for each SKU. That is exactly where our Technical Product Service team supports converters and brand owners.
Strategic questions are broader.
- What does your sustainability reporting require?
- How are your EPR fees structured across markets, and have you modelled the full cost picture including yield, not just the per-kilo fee?
- What are your brand’s claims and values, and does the packaging support them?
- Where does your supply chain need resilience?
These questions need to be in the room alongside the technical ones. In our experience, the decisions that cause problems later are the ones where only one set of questions got asked.
Material-agnostic does not mean opinion-free
MM Board & Paper produces both virgin fibre and recycled cartonboard including barrier grades, liner, kraft papers, uncoated fine papers and pulp. That means we do not have a commercial interest in steering customers toward one fibre type over the other.
The decision should be evidence-based — and that is where MM Board & Paper adds value. We bring LCA data, converting performance data, grammage optimisation analysis and regulatory guidance to the table. We test application requirements against the facts, challenge assumptions when the evidence does not support them, and help brand owners define a specification they can stand behind.
The change that is already happening
The conversation is changing. The question used to be which board is cheaper. Increasingly, it is which board puts us in the strongest overall position — commercially, technically, regulatorily and in terms of sustainability.
When that broader question is asked properly, the answer is often different from what teams assumed at the outset. In many cases, WLC proves to be the right choice more often than expected.
That is the value of working with a partner who can assess both virgin fibre and recycled cartonboard on the basis of evidence, not preference. MM Board & Paper offers both across six European mills. If you want to reassess your applications with a clearer framework, our teams are ready.
