Browncolor for food service articles – Paper & Boards goes natural

Belgian converter Paper & Boards specialises in sustainable food service packaging. Their burger clamshells made of Browncolor from MM Karton promise lasting taste, but do not last in the environment: The sustainable packaging solution is replacing polystyrene food containers in many snack and fast food restaurants.

To go, please – but sustainable
Strong brand identity and sustainability go hand in hand. Paper & Boards is relying on our recycled cartonboard Browncolor for its production of take-away packaging. Browncolor picks up on the trend towards brown packaging material and ensures that burgers enjoy a unique, natural presentation. Browncolor is completely recyclable, biodegradable and therefore leaves no traces in the environment. The cartonboard solution is replacing the former polystyrene clamshells of many snack and fast food restaurants in Belgium.

The new food service packaging made of Browncolor is a more sustainable choice

Closing the loop
The history of fast food is linked to single use packaging. And the rise of polystyrene as food packaging material is linked to the rise of fast food. Expanded polystyrene (EPS, sometimes referred to by its trade name Styrofoam) is one of the most common types of plastics used for foodservice packaging in the form of the foam food container.
The future of polystyrene in the EU is determined by the new legislation on plastics that harm the environment. Packaging of fast food and take-out food involves a significant amount of material that ends up in landfills or litter: Due to the Single Use Plastic Directive, polystyrene packaging for food and drinks will be banned from 2021. Fast food brought EPS to fame and now this business sector is phasing it out completely.

“We see it as our obligation to contribute to a sustainable and environmentally sound development. Our priority is to find the best packaging solutions for our clients. Fast food can be enjoyed even more if it comes in sustainable packaging materials, sustainably produced. After all, your conscience sits with you at the table.” – Willy Van Den Langenbergh, Management Paper & Boards.
