Clinical trial excellence: Delivering a Phase 3 packaging solution under pressure
In clinical trials, the role of packaging goes far beyond a contain. It becomes the key link between a therapy in development, and the patients that rely on it. As a result, it needs to meet exacting standards, protect investigational medicinal products with precision, and support every site, every patient, and every enrolment milestone, without disruption.
A global pharmaceutical sponsor worked with MM Pharma & HC Packaging to deliver under pressure. With first patient enrolment fast approaching, the sponsor needed more than individual packaging components, they needed a reliable partner able to deliver several validated clinical trial packaging solutions under an extremely tight timeline.
For a Phase 3 study spanning multiple European sites, any delay could have put the study at risk. Within a matter of weeks, child-resistant patient wallets, multi-language booklet labels and tamper-evident labels all had to be developed, validated and delivered.
The challenge: Navigating clinical trial demands
The complexity here went far beyond a tight timeline. Each of the three components came with its own technical demands, and those demands had to work together.
The patient wallets needed to pass child-resistance certification while remaining accessible to elderly patients, a balance that tricky to get right. The booklet labels required content in up to 17 languages, adding significant design and print complexity. The tamper-evident labels had to integrate with the wallet without interfering with its opening mechanism. And cutting across all of this, artwork was still being finalised during the early stages of manufacturing planning. This is a common reality in clinical trials, but one that adds genuine risk when lead times are already stretched.

The approach: Early risk identification and parallel workstreams
Rather than treating each component as a separate workstream, the MM Pharma & HC Packaging team brought the sponsor’s clinical operations into a rapid collaborative design workshop at the outset. The goal was to identify risk early and design it out, rather than manage it later.
The final wallet used a push-and-slide child-resistant mechanism that met the required ISO and PPWR safety standards while remaining genuinely patient-friendly for older or less dextrous users.
For the booklet label, the technical design team engineered a solution that reduced overall thickness to allow randomisation data to be overprinted cleanly, while ensuring ease of application onto the wallet and intuitive handling for patients in a home or site setting.
Rather than defaulting to a conventional over-label for tamper evidence, the team developed a custom destructible label engineered specifically to integrate with the wallet design without affecting opening functionality or the integrity of the child-resistant mechanism.
To keep the programme moving despite evolving artwork, parallel workstreams were established across design, artwork management and production. Daily cross-functional reviews, pre-booked manufacturing capacity, parallel tooling qualification and rapid material sourcing from approved vendors all kept the project on track without sacrificing quality or compliance.
The results: Expanded partnership and zero deviation
All three packaging components were delivered ahead of schedule. Packaging validation passed with zero deviations, and the sponsor’s quality audit was cleared at the first attempt; a result that reflects the value of front-loading technical expertise rather than resolving issues under production pressure.
The working relationship did not end there. Following completion of the project, the sponsor extended the partnership to cover additional clinical studies. In a sector where supplier trust is built on right-first-time performance and the ability to absorb complexity without passing it back, that decision speaks clearly.
